Zaanse Schans is just a few minutes from modern, downtown Zaandam, Netherlands but it feels a world away. At Zaanse Schans dogs and humans can get a taste of Dutch life between the 17th and 19th centuries. It is a free attraction open year-round.
There are eight historic windmills at Zaanse Schans. Several of these were relocated to the attraction to illustrate various windmill functions and architectural styles. Zaanse Schans also features artisan workshops and boutiques selling traditional crafts and collectibles.
At Zaanse Schans dogs are welcome to join you for a meal in a variety of restaurants. Louis and I enjoyed lunch at De Tweekoppige Phoenix. “The Two-Headed Phoenix” is also a working distillery where you can sample local liquors and spirits.
It is possible for you and your dog to spend the night at Zaanse Schans too. The charming Heerlijck Slaapen Bed & Breakfast has a couple of dog friendly rooms. Rates start at €139,00 per night including buffet breakfast. Please contact the property directly for details.
If you prefer to stay in a more modern hotel, the dog friendly Inntel Hotel Zaandam is just a 6-minute train ride away. The hotel is designed to resemble traditional Zaan area houses stacked on top of each other. It’s a funky option located directly across from the Zaandam train station.
Zaanse Schans is also an easy day trip from Amsterdam. It takes approximately 20 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk – Zaanse Schans station, followed by a 10-minute walk to the attraction.
