Miami International (MIA) is one of the busiest airports in America. If you have ever flown to the Caribbean or South America, chances are you passed through MIA. I used to fly from Boston to the Virgin Islands with my dog and dreaded connecting in Miami. The airport is so large taking the dog out past security to find a pet relief area at MIA was risky.
Several months ago, I was flying to the USVI again (sadly without my dog) when I noticed a small pet relief area directly across from my gate. I researched and learned that there are now four pet relief areas inside Miami International Airport. You longer have to schlep all your stuff out past security, just so your dog can go potty!
I’m sure people thought I was crazy going into the pet relief area at MIA without a dog, but I wanted to take some photos for you. When you press the button on the wall, the black spigots pop up and spray down the artificial grass. The room was big enough to have installed several more units, but beggars can’t be choosers.
The pet relief areas at MIA are intended for people traveling with service animals. However, pets are allowed to enter if it’s not in use. As of 2016, all US airports with over 10,000 passengers a year must have at least one relief area per terminal. Does your airport have an inside pet relief area? If so, please let us know the details!
