Munich consistently rates as one of the world’s “most liveable” cities. In 2018 the Mercer Quality of Living Survey even listed Munich as having the highest standard of living in all of Germany. So, does this mean the standard of living is high for dogs too? Louie and I visited in May 2019 to see just how dog friendly Munich is.
Where to Play:
The first thing that stood out about Munich is how green it is! The Englischer Garten fills 910 acres in the center of the city. The entire park is dog friendly, so pups are free to run off-leash and swim. After some playtime, dog owners and their pups gather at the Mini-Hofbrauhaus in the middle of the park. It’s a lovely place for some coffee and cake.
Where to Stay:
Louie and I spent several nights at the Pullman Hotel in Munich. Located in a leafy, residential area, the Pullman is not far from the Englischer Garten. I liked that the hotel was easy to drive to and offers secure parking. Despite the quiet location, you are just steps from the dog friendly Munich subway. You can be in the historical center of Munich in less than 10 minutes.
Where to Eat:
The Hofbrauhaus in Munich’s Altstadt is probably the best-known beer hall in the world. I was surprised to learn that along with giant mugs of beer and oompah music; the Hofbrauhaus serves absolutely delicious traditional food. It is also one of the most dog friendly restaurants in Munich! I enjoyed an excellent Sauerbraten with bread dumplings while Louie flirted with the barmaids.
If you are looking for quieter dog friendly dining, I recommend Munich’s Spatenhaus an der Oper. Like the Hoffbrauhaus, the Spatenhaus is affiliated with one of Munich’s famous breweries. However, at Spatenhaus, the emphasis is less on raucous fun and more on the elegant Bavarian cuisine. Louie sat by my side while I indulged in venison and spaetzle.
Standard of Living for Dogs:
With excellent dog friendly restaurants and parks, I think the standard of living for Munich’s pups rates very high! As visitors, I know Louie, and I both thoroughly enjoyed it! Have you traveled someplace in Germany that you think has a higher standard of living for dogs? Please let us know about it in the comments.
Louie is darling, and so well traveled! Thanks for this recommendation – The Hofbrauhaus will be a must-do for us! The Pullman is beautiful, I will consider that as well!
