With a name like Beaune (pronounced bone), your dog is bound to love it!
Beaune lies at the center of the Burgundy region of France. The well-preserved, walled city is full of world-renowned wineries and historical monuments. There are many dog friendly Beaune wine cellars so you won’t have to miss out on sampling the local offerings. Small dogs can even visit the stunning Hôtel-Dieu Museum if they are in a carrier.
Hôtel de la Poste
Because Louie and I traveled from Geneva to Beaune by car, I chose to stay just outside the old city. Beaune’s dog friendly Hôtel de la Poste offers secure parking for 12 euro a night. Their website indicates that space is limited, so I reserved a spot in advance. I was pleased to find the space marked with my name as soon as I entered the parking area.
The Hôtel de la Poste in Beaune allows dogs of any size for an additional charge of 15 euro per night. Louie was also able to join me in the breakfast room each morning. When nature calls, dogs can visit the grassy courtyard between the hotel and parking area or explore the walkways that run along the city walls.
Visiting the Hôtel-Dieu Museum with a Dog
From the Hôtel de la Poste it’s only a 5-minute walk to the Hôtel-Dieu Museum. I read online that the famous Beaune landmark allows small dogs if carried in a bag. It wasn’t clear what they considered “small,” so I decided to try visiting with Louie. At 27 pounds he’s a bit heavy for a shoulder bag, but not when he rides on my back in his K9 Sport Sack. The staff had a good laugh when they saw Louie in his backpack, but said he was more than welcome to come in.
Hôtel-Dieu Museum, also known as the Hospices de Beaune, dates back to the 1440s. It was home to the Les sœurs hospitalières de Beaune, a religious order which provided medical care for the poor. Today the Hôtel-Dieu is a historical museum that houses priceless works of religious art. It is a jewel of gothic architecture made up of multicolor tiled spires and half-timber galleries. I’m so grateful that the Hospices de Beaune allows small dogs, so I didn’t have to miss it.
Dog Friendly Wine Tasting in Beaune
After carrying Louie through the Hôtel-Dieu on my back, I was ready for some refreshment. When in Beaune, that means wine! We headed directly across the street to the dog friendly Beaune Marché aux Vins. Located in a former church, the Marché offers tastings, cellar tours, an art gallery, and gourmet market. It’s a touristy place but a worth a stop if you are short on time.
Louie and I had a great day exploring the old city of Beaune. I’d love to go back and visit some of the dog friendly vineyards in the area. Have you spent time in Burgundy with a dog? If you have recommendations, please leave a comment below.

I am planning to take my dogs to France next year which will be their first trip out of the uk so this was really interesting. Many thanks
Your dogs will love France! Have you checked on the requirements for returning to the UK? I think it may become much more difficult after October if there is a “no deal” Brexit.
It sounds like a wonderful place to visit. I wish there.
Dog friendly wine testing!? Who knew! Great post and always good to know where we can take out fur babies!
Love this post! We are staying in Dijon the second week in October with Moxie, and will be visiting Beaune too!
Such a beautiful part of France! I wish we’d had a chance to go to Dijon too.
Love the views, cant wait to go there together with my dog.
